Botanicals: plant part and process

The same plant can give very different materials. The part used and the way it is processed decide the composition, and with it the allergens, hazards and limits.

Why part and process matter

Cold-expressed citrus oils keep non-volatile compounds such as furocoumarins, which drive phototoxicity limits for leave-on skin products. The distilled oil from the same fruit carries far less of them.

Absolutes and resinoids contain heavier compounds than distilled oils, so their allergen and impurity profile differs, for example atranol in lichen extracts.

Folded, terpeneless and rectified oils concentrate some components and remove others. Always classify, and calculate allergens, from the composition of the grade you actually buy.

Typical paths

Citrus peel→Cold expression→Folded / FCF
Flowers→Concrete→Absolute
Leaves→Steam distillation→Rectified oil
Resin→ResinoidorDistilled oil
